Do you want to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight? Here are our top 5 small lifestyle changes you can make now that can lead to big results.
1. Avoid processed foods. Lauren Lipinski, who’s worked at MWLC for 15 years, says it’s best to focus on buying fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables whenever possible. Canned foods and boxed freezer meals are full of added sodium, fake sugars, preservatives and unwanted chemicals.
2. Exercise! Lauren says that even if you exercise three days a week to start, you can see a significant impact on your weight loss or help maintain your goal weight. “It also improves muscles and joints, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure - and even improves sleep!”
3. Be mindful of nighttime snacking. It can be a challenge to cut out nighttime snacks. But if you want to have a little something, the key is to be mindful about it and not consume something that will undo your day’s hard work. “Planning meals and snacks ahead of time and saving a small healthy snack to have after dinner can help you stay successful,” Lauren says. She also suggests that you brush your teeth immediately after dinner or your evening snack, because you’ll be less likely to eat afterward.
4. Keep track of everything you eat. When we say to keep track of everything, we mean it — the good, the bad and the ugly! “This not only helps you have a snapshot of areas that need improvement, but it is a great tool to help you pre-plan,” Lauren says. You can use a paper journal or one of the many apps that are available to track your intake.
5. Drink 64 ounces of water daily. All of these tips combined will give you the best boost on your weight loss journey, but Lauren says the one simple change that everyone should make is to drink more water, because proper hydration has so many benefits. “Consuming a healthy amount of water benefits your health in many ways, including providing proper hydration, flushing waste, kidney function, and lowering blood pressure,” she says. “In addition, water intake also contributes to weight loss by decreasing hunger, increasing metabolism and enhancing exercise, and flushing excess sodium.”
