Is this it - our last gasp of summer before Back to School season forces us to shift gears? For all those working hard to fit in a final summer trip to the beach or escape to a favorite theme park, it can be tempting to fall off track from our healthy goals. Any changes to a routine might even feel overwhelming.
“The most challenging thing about traveling when you’re trying to follow a weight loss program is the unpredictability of situations that may come up that are difficult to plan for and the disruption to your normal routine,” says Jennifer Sodini, corporate recruiter at Medical Weight Loss Clinic.
Don’t let these challenges keep you from enjoying those summer vacations. Jennifer suggests coming up with a reasonable plan that you can follow – even while away from home.
“It doesn’t have to be a super strict plan,” she says. “It can simply be a set of boundaries to try to stay within.”
To make it easier, be sure to pack your favorite Medical Weight Loss Clinic supplement shakes or bars. Even if they are not typically part of your plan, these can help to deal with sweet cravings when the kids are enjoying ice cream cones. They can help you fend off hunger if the wait to get into a restaurant is running too long. And overall, keeping high-protein bars and other healthy snacks handy will help you to make better food choices throughout the day.
Don’t think of your last summer vacation as a trip away from your new, healthy habits. Instead, aim to eat mindfully and stay active.
“When you travel you tend to eat out more frequently so it is important that you try to make good choices - just like you would if you were eating out while you’re at home and following your program,” Jennifer adds. “Another way that you can avoid weight gain or stalling weight while you’re traveling is to stay as active as possible while away.”
Try taking a walk each day. Go swimming or take a bike ride. It will help counteract any additional calories you take in while on-the-go. And remain flexible, Jennifer says. Come into the clinic and talk with our expert staff before heading out on an adventure. Our staff is here to help patients create a reasonable plan and navigate changes like this. And when you return, we can look at what worked well and what was a challenge – to make your next trip that much more successful and enjoyable.
It’s important to remember that a week of vacation isn’t going to make-or-break your progress. And you’re not on this healthy journey alone.
“Making changes to habits is all about collecting the small victories along the way,” Jennifer says. “Let any trip you take be a victory!”
