10 gifts to get your healthy friends this holiday

While it doesn’t take fancy gadgets to lose weight and keep it off, there are handy kitchen items that can make meeting your goals with Medical Weight Loss Clinic and living a healthy lifestyle easier and more convenient.

Here are 10 of our favorite kitchen gadgets to help you succeed on your weight loss program and beyond.

1.     Instant Pot. This is a favorite among clinic staff.Slow cooker, sauté pan, steamer, warmer and pressure cooker all rolled into one!” said Saginaw Clinic Manager and Nutritionist Krysta Sauvie. She adds that it’s a time saver because it cooks most meals faster than the stove would and allows you to multi-task because you don’t have to stand over it while it cooks. “It also allows you to cook food from frozen which — if you are like me and you forget to take stuff out of the freezer — will save your life!”

A blender and food processor are two of our favorite things to make the holidays healthier.

2.     Food processor. “Saves time for my meal prep and helps me to prepare quick and yummy dips/salsa in a flash!” said Lansing Clinic Manager Rosemarie Royce.

3.     Vegetable spiralizer. This will allow you to make vegetable noodles for pasta alternatives. “Zucchini noodles with homemade spaghetti sauce is perfect for a pasta night,” said Grand Rapids Clinic Manager Maria Bosker.

4.     Air fryer. Much like the Instant Pot, it can cook from frozen and cooks most meals faster than the stovetop. You can recreate some of your favorite meals without adding the extra fat from oils, Maria said. Plus, it provides the crispier texture that can you can often miss when you eat healthier.

5.     Food storage containers. They are great for meal prepping. “What I find is most of our patients are not aware that a lot of Tupperware has a measurement associated with it. This makes measuring your portions and prepping for future meals even more convenient since you can do it all in one dish!” Krysta said.

6.     Vegetable slicer. Another time saver, Krysta said. “It makes dishes that use a lot of vegetables like salads and stir fry a lot easier.” You can choose from different sizes, depending on the dish you’re making.

7.     Thermal pitcher. Ann Arbor Clinic Senior Manager Mary Pierce loves these for how convenient they make it to keep drinks hot or cold.

8.     Salt-free seasonings. Krysta’s favorites are Penzy’s spices and Mrs. Dash. “There are many different flavors allowing you to achieve fun flavors without increasing your sodium intake,” she said.

9.     Blender. A must-have to make your own healthy shakes and smoothies at home.

10.  Air popper. This is great for making popcorn in a healthy way.

Of course there is also great equipment that can help you achieve your goals beyond the kitchen. A few of our staff favorites:

1.     Workout equipment. “Not only will you save on gym fees, but you also save time commuting and don't have to worry about Michigan weather,” Rosemarie said. “I prefer kettle bells because they are versatile and when used correctly have the highest amount of caloric burn per minute.”

2.     iWatch and step counters. “It gives people a better visual of how active they are,” Mary said.

3.     MWLC shaker cups with rubber bands. “Every time our patient fills it up with water, they take off a rubber band. It gives them a good idea how their daily intake of water is going and what they still need to accomplish,” Mary said.
