For those who follow the metro Detroit restaurant scene, one Ferndale pizzeria is surely embracing its Detroit roots. And since National Detroit Style Pizza Day is June 23, we thought we’d shine a spotlight on Como’s.
Como’s reopened under new ownership in 2019 and has made Detroit-style pizzas the centerpiece of its menu. One pizza in particular stuck out to us. It’s called the Medical Weight Loss – and it’s easy to tell with one glance this one isn’t meant for anyone focused on a healthy diet.
Topped with crushed meatballs, sausage and pepperoni, the pizza is meant for meat-lovers to be sure. We can’t add it to our list of MWLC-recommended foods, but we applaud the nod from one local business to another. The pizza is listed on the Specialty Pizza menu and comes in small and large sizes.
In Detroit, Medical Weight Loss is such a well-known brand and it’s synonymous with eating healthy. That’s what inspired this decadent pizza.
The Medical Weight Loss pizza became an early favorite at Como’s for its naturally fermented dough topped with crushed meatballs, sausage, pepperoni and bacon then baked in square Detroit style pizza pans.
There are ways to satisfy your pizza craving in a healthier manner. Go for thin crust. Go light on cheese. Skip deli meats but add as many fresh vegetables as possible. Fill up on salad first.
Pizza mainly consists of carbs and fat. Because it is very low in protein it’s not very filling and can be tough to include in a Medical Weight Loss Clinic program.
So our staff shared recommendations for what you can do when that pizza craving strikes:
Make one at home, where you can add any vegetables on your meal plan that you would like to your pizza – even pineapple if you’re so inclined.
Fresh, pureed tomatoes with Italian herbs are a great substitution for tomato sauce. Get all the flavor without the salt.
Use half of a pita, cut length-wise, for a very thin crust.
Swap out the cheese and try baked cottage cheese or part-skim mozzarella if it suits your meal plan. It’s completely carb-friendly.
