Trouble sleeping? You’re not alone.
Dayna Clayborn is clinic manager at Medical Weight Loss Clinic in Jackson and she encounters patients who mention they can’t fall asleep, stay asleep all night or get the kind of energy they need to be productive all day.
It’s a common occurrence, Dayna says, but it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Patients who are working to lose weight can expect to see their sleep quality improve. And those who sleep better, lose weight more efficiently too.
“With better sleep, you can be more physically active,” Dayna says. “You can make better decisions throughout the day. You won’t grab junk foods. You’re more aware of what you’re eating.”
Being mindful about what we eat and how much water we drink is important all the time - especially on a healthy journey. But it’s not just about what we consume that matters when we’re trying to lose weight.
“Sleep also helps fat cells break down into energy,” she says. “Even if we’re not awake, our bodies are doing work on the inside.”
Cortisol levels, thyroid hormones, appetite regulation, these are all impacted by the quality of sleep we get each night. And all are important to a healthy weight.
Sometimes stress can keep us awake at night. Dayna says if patients feel like they can’t shut their minds down, it’s time to refocus. She recommends taking a walk around the block or on a treadmill at home.
“Get in a 15 or 20 minute workout, anything that will clear your mind and refocus your energy to allow you to relax,” she says.
Dayna admits she too needs 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night to feel her best. Without enough sleep, patients will see stress levels increase and mood changes. Sleep is also the time when our bodies reset and restore, she adds.
