How a walking lunch keeps Medical Weight Loss Clinic employees fit and happy

Some of the best ideas are the simplest.

If you visit our Medical Weight Loss Clinic location in Grosse Pointe Woods on any given day, you know our staff is ready to help you reach your healthy goals. But you might like to know they’re also making healthy choices for themselves at the same time. The employees at this location recently began walking during their lunch breaks.

Theresa S., a consultant at the clinic, has always made a point to walk during her lunch break – even in the winter. This past spring, she and Manager Cheryl D. inspired Medical Assistant Kim F. to try it. The staff wanted to make sure they were doing all they could to eat healthy and make healthy decisions.

“I’m someone who doesn’t enjoy sitting and although I work out every morning before work, getting some movement in at lunch is important for my mental health,” Cheryl says.

After the constraints and stress of a pandemic lockdown, health professionals could also use a boost.

“Walking helps us,” says Kim. “I do 30 minutes of walking outside and 30 minutes for a light lunch. It gives us energy. It’s a way to de-stress. Never in 15 years of working had I thought about walking during the day.

A busy 8-hour work day that requires a lot of time sitting down can be tough. And in some cases if you can fit your exercise into a break during the day, Kim says, you don’t have to worry about it later. It’s easy to feel tired and skip a workout at the end of the day.

“We encourage each other,” she says. The staff members bring workout clothes to the clinic and each go at their own pace, during their own breaks, so the office remains fully staffed.

Theresa loves getting fresh air and admires flowers while she walks. Kim listens to music on her phone. And Cheryl regularly strives to make it two miles during her break.

Because she’s passionate about exercise, Cheryl knows when that afternoon slump hits she can either drink more coffee - which can compromise sleep - or she can opt for the fresh air and Vitamin D she gets from walking outdoors.

The staff members agree that it’s a refreshing way to break up the work day.

Have you ever tried to fit your fitness into your mid-day lunch break? It’s just one way to add a healthy habit into your everyday routine.
