At Medical Weight Loss Clinic, you know we’re here to help you along your weight loss journey to reach your goals – no matter where or when you begin. But you might not know about our New Moms program, which is aimed to assist mothers who have given birth and are breastfeeding.
Our knowledgeable staff assists mothers - as soon as four weeks after giving birth - who are seeking support and a healthy way forward.
“If you’re breastfeeding and have weight loss as a goal, we can help,” said Tabitha Panetta, training director for Medical Weight Loss Clinic. “There are many other benefits to the New Moms program, too. The well-balanced foods in this meal plan allow our patients to consume the additional protein, vitamins and minerals they need. Balanced eating will help maximize energy. And for new mothers, that’s so important. The program also helps aide in better digestion and more restful sleep.”
The Medical Weight Loss Clinic New Moms program helps ensure women are eating a healthy, whole-food-based diet that provides the right balance of nutrition and enough calories to support milk production. Tabitha says women who are breastfeeding a newborn need to consume a minimum of an additional 500 calories just to support enough milk production for a 24-hour period. Yet, it is possible to strike the right balance in healthy calorie intake to help burn stored fat, too.
The New Moms program takes into account the metabolic boost breastfeeding provides. With close guidance from our staff, a new mom can learn how to choose and balance her meals to make the most of that boosted metabolism they experience while breastfeeding.
“This is the time to eat well,” Tabitha said. “It’s like you’re running a marathon without actually doing it. If you can hone into that, that’s where the weight loss is.”
The New Moms program is strictly limited to those breastfeeding mothers who are interested in following a customized healthy program for weight loss. For those interested, the program can begin four weeks after a vaginal birth or six weeks after a C-Section. No prescriptions or appetite suppressants are part of this program, but protein supplements are helpful and available.
“Weight loss is slower on this program,” Tabitha said. But for good reason, a breastfeeding woman’s body needs the carbohydrates, dairy and fat that can be limited in other meal plans.
“Your body still requires all these things,” she added. “As challenging as it might sound to start a meal plan as a new mother, we are here to make sure you’re getting the support you need. The alternative is not a better option.”
Our staff is available to help new mothers with this extra oversight and guidance, as they deal with the challenges of sleep deprivation and hormonal changes that can impact their health. The New Moms plan helps patients avoid the pitfalls that can come with a major life change – like allowing major gaps between meals. For those looking to ease back toward their goal weight, this is a healthy way to start.
While all new moms are welcome at Medical Weight Loss Clinic, only those breastfeeding would qualify for this program. And it’s flexible. Should a patient choose to breastfeed and stop, the program transitions to suit those changes.
