Jeannie Williams understands what patients who receive a diagnosis of diabetes may be experiencing. Jeannie has Type 1 diabetes herself and she’s worked with many patients at the Medical Weight Loss Clinic’s Jackson location who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and were able to control it.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes refers to people who naturally don’t produce the insulin their body needs. Instead their immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells. And Type 2 diabetes occurs when a person becomes insulin resistant. They are able to produce insulin but not to the extent needed. Being inactive or carrying extra weight can contribute to Type 2 diabetes.
We spoke with Jeannie about some of the warning signs and ways to get back to a healthier life. Some of the earliest symptoms of diabetes can be easily overlooked, she says.
“Many people experience crankiness, excessive thirst, excessive urination, hunger and especially fatigue,” Jeannie says. “A lot of times, it's disregarded - especially in somebody with weight issues. They think because they're overweight that these symptoms are normal and a lot of times they're the polar opposite of that.”
The first step if something doesn’t feel right is seeing your doctor. Should a diagnosis come back as Type 2 diabetes, the doctor will likely advise you to limit alcohol intake, control your blood pressure, avoid fast food and processed foods and increase exercise.
Jeannie says that all of that advice mirrors the guidelines offered here at Medical Weight Loss Clinic.
“We want to see you eat healthy, eat clean, control your carbohydrates and the amount of fats that you are getting in your system - which all help with controlling blood sugar levels,” she says.
Jeannie suggests tracking carbohydrate and fat intake, which will set patients on a path to weight loss and make it easier for their bodies to produce insulin.
“Get going on a healthy exercise program and get in lots of water to keep the system running,” she adds. “Diabetes can go into remission as long as the proper measures are taken. It will always be a concern but keeping yourself healthy keeping your body weight down and staying on a good routine can definitely help.”
And you don’t have to go it alone. Medical Weight Loss Clinic specializes in helping individuals of all ages to attain a healthier lifestyle.
“Medical Weight Loss Clinic teaches you how to do these things to prevent diabetes or help control it,” Jeannie says. “We deal a lot with Type 2 diabetes and it can easily be controlled with diet. Eating every two and a half to three hours like we recommend on our plan can definitely help as well. Diabetes usually happens because of the amount of body fat causes a resistance to insulin, which is a hormone. This is why weight loss can be the best step to take as a preventative measure and as a control measure if you are already diagnosed.”
Diabetes comes with its share of other concerns, too. It can put a patient at risk of kidney disease, high blood pressure, eye damage, neuropathy or even heart failure.
If you’re experiencing excessive thirst or urination, or pancreatitis, be sure to see a doctor and check your blood sugar level. The right medication is a start, and working with a counselor on a customized program here at Medical Weight Loss Clinic can help you avoid or control diabetes.
