Medical Weight Loss Clinic pros share the best hearty, healthy winter meals

Committing to a new program - or simply staying on a healthy course - this new year means eating mindfully. And Tabitha Panetta, training director at Medical Weight Loss Clinic, knows just the hearty dishes and ingredients that can contribute to success for those looking to lose weight or improve their health.

“Be mindful of the holiday hangover,” she warns. “It is very possible your cravings are in overdrive because of the calorie rich foods we indulge in during the holidays. These cravings are easily carried over to January and February if not put in check.”

Add to that the gray Michigan days ahead, and it could be a recipe for disaster. But Medical Weight Loss Clinic can help. Experts like Tabitha understand how to help us stay in a healthy mindset.

“It’s dark and cold in the winter, the weather is bad and we stay indoors longer,” Tabitha says. “When we feel cold, sad, tired or bored – when we get the winter blues - we crave foods heavy in carbs to help us feel better.”

Stock up on hearty vegetables to make your winter meals warming, filling and healthy.

The carbohydrates we choose to add to our diets can make all the difference. Tabitha suggests some filling and healthy staples to keep handy, especially this winter. She says stock up on sweet potatoes and root vegetables, like carrots. These carbs add a little bit of sweetness and starch to any dish, and they’re filling too.

Brown rice is also a great ingredient to keep around. If it’s on your healthy program, brown rice is sure to keep you feeling full and satisfied.

Some of Tabitha’s favorite hearty winter meals are easy to make – and the recipes make enough to save a batch for later. She’s a fan of making craveable dishes like Stuffed Peppers, Pot Roast, Chili, Soup and Meatballs.

She also pointed to recipes for Crockpot Venison, Crockpot Shredded Chicken Chili and Moroccan Meatballs that you can find on our recipes page

“These are great ideas for comfort foods you can make in multiple servings,” Tabitha says. “The Stuffed Cabbage Soup is one of my favorite crockpot recipes we made in the clinic.”

And don’t forget the protein. Healthy, lean meats can make any winter meal a hearty feast – all while helping you stay on the right track.
