Pandemic weight gain and how to turn it all around

Chris Cooper, owner of Zeppelin Cleaning Services, is living proof that it’s possible to make progress toward a healthier life – even in a pandemic.

Grosse Pointe Woods resident and business owner Chris Cooper had been a Medical Weight Loss Clinic patient for just two months when the pandemic hit and everything shut down.

That’s when he got off track and gained back the 15 pounds he had lost on the plan and more.

“The gym was shut down, and I was stuck in the house,” says the 42-year-old, adding that stress and losing focus contributed to his weight gain.

But in July, after about six months away, he was ready to get back on track.

“I wanted to get back into shape and came up with a weight loss challenge to raise money for a few local charities,” he says.

He turned to a friend, Medical Weight Loss Clinic and Facebook for extra motivation.

Chris launched a friendly competition with his friend and fellow business owner, Jason Kaleta, in support of two good causes: Detroit Dog Rescue and Kids on the Go. The friends challenged each other to drop pounds while they donated to the nonprofits. They made donations based on pounds lost and likes on their Facebook posts. They inspired MWLC to follow suit with donations as well.

During the August challenge, Chris lost 12.5 pounds, beating Jason by 2.5 pounds, to weigh in at 199 pounds.

“I was super happy to get under 200,” Chris said at the time.

He’s since continued on that trajectory, losing a total of 18 pounds since he returned to MWLC in July. He says his return to the program has been great and credits that to the program being so easy to follow.
