Luminita Cairo and her family love to take trips to the beach.
“Our family loves the ocean, so we try to take a couple of beach vacations a year,” she says. “There is nothing like the sound, feel, smell, and of course the awesome sunsets.”
But at some point in recent years, she quit the pre-vacation clothes shopping trips she used to enjoy.
“Our last couple trips before I joined MWLC, I just packed whatever, I just didn’t care. I thought, I am fat, so what is the point of buying new clothes? I am still going to be fat,” she remembers. “Of course my husband always told me I looked beautiful, but I didn’t feel it, not a bit.”
Like many others who struggle with their weight, Luminita, who goes by Lumi, didn’t like the way she looked, the way her clothes fit, or how she looked in pictures.
“Growing up, I was always skinny — never had any issues. I started gaining weight in my 30s. Slowly through my 30s, I went from 130 pounds til my heaviest in November 2018 of 180. I think my biggest issue with food is bread. I ate bread with everything.”
“I finally said to myself NO WAY, no way am I going to give up on myself. It’s too early to give up at 41. I was scared; I didn’t want to keep gaining weight.”
That’s when she turned to Medical Weight Loss Clinic because she knew it worked.
In 12 weeks, Lumi lost 30 pounds and went on to lose an additional 8 pounds after her program was complete. She went from a size 12 to 4/6.
Lumi says a big part of her success is due to the support of her husband and the team at the Romeo clinic.
“I have to say that my husband was my rock during this journey,” she says. “He made changes to his shopping/eating habits to help make it easier for me. For people who are trying to lose weight and eat the right things, it is difficult to do so if you are surrounded by the wrong foods.”
As for the clinic, she looked forward to visits and didn’t think of them only as weigh-ins, because she liked to see the team.
“My team at the Shelby Township Clinic (formerly the Romeo location) has been amazing. I always feel welcome and they always had helpful advice for me.
“The team wants you to succeed, they want you to do well. It's not a program where you pay your money and you do your own thing. The weigh-ins and the accountability part of the program are tools to ensure you are on track and they answer all your questions along the way.”
Lumi still checks in with the Shelby Township clinic about once a month as she works to keep the weight off for the long term and stays within about 5 pounds of her goal weight.
“Following the program helped me lose the weight I wanted to lose and have the knowledge to help keep the weight off,” she says.
Now she feels great, has more energy, enjoys shopping for clothes she doesn’t feel the need to hide in again, and receives compliments from co-workers. She has even gotten a few to join MWLC.
Her advice to those who are starting the program is to mentally prepare to start and to do it for themselves.
“Everyone has excuses and busy lives; I had my excuses as well. Yes it’s hard work involved, yes there’s a lot of prepping, and there is a lot of shopping for fresh food, but the results are so totally worth it all.”
